Peruvian Regulators: Only 34% of E-cigarette Products Have Spanish-Language Expiration Dates

In a March 2025 inspection by the Peruvian National Institute for the Protection of Competition and Intellectual Property (Indecopi), the agency found significant deficiencies in Spanish-language labeling for e-cigarette products on the market.

Key Findings:

• Only 34% of e-cigarette products had expiration dates marked in Spanish.

• The inspection covered 44 suppliers, and all inspected suppliers found deficiencies in their labeling.

Following regulatory intervention, the situation has improved:

• 77% of products now include Spanish labels for ingredients or materials that may pose a risk to consumers.

• 73% of products include Spanish-language warnings regarding the risks of use.

• However, compliance with labeling details such as manufacturer information and net contents remains low (ranging between 32% and 49%).

Official Statement:

• Indecopi announced that it will continue monitoring to ensure all products provide clear Spanish-language information and health risk warnings, threatening penalties if these are not met.

• The Ministry of Health (Minsa) also warned of the health risks of e-cigarettes and tobacco for young people, especially that nicotine can cause damage to the central nervous system, learning, memory and impulse control, and can lead to addiction.
