Pollution reduction and reuse: Korea Post and Philip Morris Korea to launch e-cigarette recycling program in 2026

On December 16, the South Korean Ministry of Science and Information Technology's Postal Services Division announced it would sign an agreement with the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, the Environment Foundation, and Philip Morris Korea (PMK) for the postal recycling of vape devices.

According to the agreement, starting in January 2026, consumers can place used PMK vape devices in designated recycling bags and drop them at nearby post office counters or mailboxes set up nationwide. The designated recycling bags will be provided by the post offices.

Recycled vape devices will be centrally collected via the postal network and transferred to each other for further processing through recycling and processing. Specific locations of nationwide mailboxes can be found on the "Internet Mail Office" website.

Previously, due to the lack of unified recycling standards and proper processing channels, most discarded vape devices were thrown away as ordinary trash or ended up in random piles. Through multifaceted cooperation, this recycling system aims to reduce environmental pollution and the rate at which illegal and improper waste is distributed, and to increase the recycling of materials, including rare metals, in order to support the development of a circular economy.

Within this collaboration, PMK will be responsible for providing the energy and support necessary for the construction and operation of the recycling system. The Environmental Foundation will be responsible for the quantity of public awareness campaigns and events. The Postal Service will leverage its nationwide postal logistics area for the development of the overall recycling process. The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment will provide administrative support and a student program to promote relevant systems and policies for improving recovery and reuse.
